Tiffany & Co. has long stood at the intersection of heritage and artistry, where the rarest gemstones are transformed into works that transcend ornament. Among the maison’s most enduring signatures is the Bird on a Rock, a design born from the imagination of Jean Schlumberger, whose whimsical interpretations brought high jewelry into narrative form.

This year, the House reinterprets Schlumberger’s emblem through a creation that unites its most celebrated jewel, the Tiffany Diamond. It serves as a reminder that true icons are not bound to one point in history alone.

A Diamond Beyond Measure

The Tiffany Diamond’s history began in 1877, when a 287.42-carat rough yellow diamond was discovered in the Kimberley Mine of South Africa. Charles Lewis Tiffany, the House’s founder, secured the stone for $18,000, an acquisition that signaled both ambition and foresight. Sent to Paris under the guidance of Chief Gemologist Dr. George Frederick Kunz, the diamond was cut into a modified brilliant with 82 facets, a departure from convention designed to heighten its fire. What emerged was a 128.54-carat gem, enduringly one of the finest yellow diamonds in existence.

Its importance has never rested solely on scale. The Tiffany Diamond has become a symbol of the House’s philosophy of seeking beauty above size, a testament to its commitment to artistry. Over nearly a century and a half, the gem has appeared in only a handful of settings and has been worn on four occasions: first by Mrs. Mary Whitehouse at the 1957 Tiffany Ball, then by Audrey Hepburn in publicity photographs for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, later by Lady Gaga at the Academy Awards, and most recently by Beyoncé in the About Love campaign with JAY-Z. Each moment reaffirmed its place as a jewel of rare cultural resonance.

Schlumberger’s Enduring Vision

Among the Tiffany Diamond’s settings, few are as emblematic as its placement within Schlumberger’s Bird on a Rock brooch in 1995. The design balanced extravagance with playfulness, presenting a diamond-encrusted bird perched atop the legendary stone. It was a creation that spoke not only of mastery but of imagination, qualities that remain hallmarks of Schlumberger’s oeuvre.

The Fifth Transformation

Tiffany & Co.

Today, the Tiffany Diamond finds new expression in its fifth design, a transformable high jewelry masterpiece requiring 1,384 hours of craftsmanship. Conceived as both brooch and pendant, the jewel features five diamond-encrusted birds encircling the central stone, each rendered with subtle variations to suggest movement.

Where the original brooch depicted a single bird in repose, this iteration expresses flight, capturing the energy of nature while honoring Schlumberger’s vision.

The result is more than a technical triumph; it is a meditation on continuity and how heritage can evolve without relinquishing its essence. In the Tiffany Diamond’s newest incarnation, collectors and connoisseurs encounter not only a remarkable jewel, but also a legacy still evolving.
