What makes a piece of art “audacious”? In Audacity, an exhibit on view at the RCBC Plaza in Makati, it rests in the artist’s capacity to attune himself to his material; envisioning and stretching it so that it breaks previous concepts of art and rebuilds them, without losing its relevance to the context it is situated in. Sounds like a tall order for an artist, but one must not neglect the hand of a curator in the staging of a show. Chloe Magpayo, curator of the said exhibit, rose to that challenge. That this show is located in the bare, cracked, and gray void inside the RCBC Plaza in the middle of the urban cacophony of Makati shows Magpayo’s deft hand in making viewers feel transported so that their encounters with the works and mediums become unfamiliar, even to regular gallery hoppers, collectors, and art enthusiasts.
