A membrane is defined to be a layer of cells that forms the outer boundary of a cell. They allow certain substances to pass while they block others. They also regulate what can go in and out, being essential to the life of a cell. In viewing artist Nicole Coson's current exhibition, and perhaps with Nicole’s experiences and with all the themes of her work, membranes are her understanding of how society, family and coloniality have shaped her experience and her art. "I always consider the Philippines to be my home. I look for Filipino food even when I'm abroad. I've actually brought my friends over [to the Philippines] for them to be able to experience it," says Nicole Coson. Nicole’s third and latest exhibit with Silverlens is a true ode to her identity and the ever-changing meaning of home. Membranes explores a journey through the past, present, and future..
