9. Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante “Verzasca”
For a dress watch, I would choose the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante Verzasca. I think it is a watch that completely stands on its own as an elegant piece because the GMT hand fits under the regular hour hand when not in use, but comes out as needed and still looks elegant. I initially would have thought the blue face would have been nicer until I actually saw the tone on the more green Verzasca pieces. – Carl Cunanan
10. Rolex Land-Dweller 40mm in Platinum
For a more sporty watch, I would probably go with the 40 millimeter Rolex Land-Dweller in platinum. The blue on that dial is just enchanting. It is available in a 36, which might be a better size for many, but the shaping and the way everything fits in the 40 just, to me, works better, and it fits on the wrist wonderfully. Again, this is a watch that can be elegant as well as sporty. And platinum doesn’t call as much attention as the gold pieces. – Carl Cunanan
11. & 12. Patek Philippe 6301P-001 Grande et Petite Sonnerie Minute Repeater (Php95,021,000) and Patek Philippe 5531G-001 Minute Repeater World Time
When people ask what would be my ultimate watch, I have to say I tend to go with the Minute Repeaters of Patek Philippe because they are just above and beyond everything else on the horological planet. I don’t know if I would go for the relative simplicity of aesthetic of the 6301P-001 Grande et Petite Sonnerie in Minute Repeater or with the wonderfully-evocative 5531G-001 Minute Repeater World Time Rare Handcrafts.
They both have their own unique soul. And you’re really not going to see (or hear) them on anybody else. These are watches that only certain people are going to be able to have, it’s really about a journey more than it is about a piece. And if you think that journey is about money, it’s not. – Carl Cunanan
13. Vacheron Constantin Soleria Ultra Grand Complication
Another wonderful journey in the watchmaking industry is when you have Vacheron Constantin make one of their special watches from the Les Cabinotiers program. You end up with a one- piece-only watch, and it is a long process when you and their designers and watchmakers get together and figure out exactly what it is you want. These can be pieces like the recently released Solaria Ultra Grand Complication, but really It’s completely open to you. One thing to note here is that if you have one of the truly unique and groundbreaking watches , be ready to lend it to Vacheron Constantin for an exhibit sometime. That much beauty deserves to be shared. – Carl Cunanan
