Fitness is becoming increasingly social—and increasingly competitive. For a growing number of recreational athletes, the gym is now preparation for an event with a finish line, a ranking, and an audience. Few competitions embody that appetite better than Hyrox, the indoor fitness race that alternates eight one-kilometer runs with eight functional workout stations, including sled pushes and pulls, farmer’s carries, and wall balls. Launched in Hamburg in 2017, it has since attracted elite competitors and everyday gym-goers to races around the world. Hyrox may have been born from the language of functional fitness, but its growth has pushed the sport into sophisticated spaces.
