Italy’s First Luxury Train Takes You to the Medieval City of Siena
What better way to head to the world’s oldest horse race than in Italy’s first luxury train?
La Dolce Vita Orient Express is offering two new trips to Siena, Italy, to see the Palio. Taking place this summer, the three-day adventures give travelers a chance to soak in the Italian countryside before experiencing the centuries-old equestrian competition.
Dating back to the 13th century, the Palio is steeped in tradition. Taking place twice a year in the historic medieval city of Siena, the bareback horse race sees 10 of the 17 distinct neighborhoods (or contrade) compete. The horses and jockeys make three laps around a square known as the Piazza del Campo, with each race typically lasting less than 90 seconds. The thrilling event is the centerpiece of the new itinerary, but it is not the only incredible experience you can expect.
The journey begins at Rome Ostiense station in the plush La Dolce Vita Lounge, where you can enjoy a tipple before boarding the train. At dusk, the train will depart the Eternal City for Tuscany. While winding through the scenic hills, you will be served a dinner by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck. The evening continues in the Bar Car, with cocktails and live piano music.
The next day, you’ll take a private transfer to the Palazzo Chigi Zondadari in Siena. The 18th-century Baroque palace overlooks the Piazza del Campo, making it the perfect place to watch the race. You’ll enjoy an aperitivo before heading to the private balconies to see all the antics play out on the square. After that, a Tuscan dinner will be served up in the palace courtyard. The afterparty continues back in the train’s Bar Car. The following morning, the train will take you back to Rome.

This journey will be offered twice during the summer, from July 1 to 3 and August 15 to 17. The Palio in July is held in honor of the Madonna di Provenzano, while the race in August is a tribute to the Assumption of Mary.
