The Good Life: Editors’ Picks
In every The Good Life: Editors’ Picks, we round up our editors’ favorites—restaurants, cocktails, experiences, exhibits, and everything in between. This week, we’ve rounded up a few standout ways to celebrate Father’s Day.
“Fire and Flavor” at Flame Restaurant, Discovery Primea, With Canada Beef
Over the holiday weekend, we had lunch with the agriculture minister of Alberta, Canada, and other industry representatives, including a cattle farmer in a cowboy hat, all of them extremely proud of Canada Beef. We dined at Flame at Discovery Primea for the launch of Fire & Flavor, a partnership that runs through July 7, highlighting the premium beef.
“With the expertise of Chef Luis Chikiamko and the power of our Josper oven, we had everything we needed to bring out the best in Canada Beef,” said David Pardo Ayala, Discovery Prime’s general manager.
And what a feast Chef Luis prepared.
For starters we had taquitos with AAA chuck flap with chimichurri, chipotle mayo, and pico de gallo; hefty menchi katsu nuggets made with Angus chuck eye roll; and rib-eye beef tartare piquant with mustard, capers and red onions.
Next came more raw Canada Beef, this time, a short plate cut in a rich Pho beef broth.
My personal favorite was the duo with Canadian dry-aged rib eye Rossini topped with a hunk of foie gras, paired with braised short ribs so tender we could’ve used the accompanying potato chips to slice them.
And what’s a Canadian meal without maple syrup? Poured over cheesecake dotted with blueberries and a pecan crust.
Highly recommended for a Father’s Day weekend meal, so best to reserve way in advance.

Come from Away at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater
I’m all for Father’s Day gifts that are experiences, especially ones that the whole family can enjoy—and tickets to the theater are always a winner: why not take him to Come From Away, now showing in Manila?
There are musicals that dazzle with spectacle—and then there are musicals that grip you with pure heart. Come From Away is the latter. On September 11, 2001, 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were unexpectedly diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, as U.S. airspace closed. Come From Away tells the true story of how this tight-knit community welcomed the stranded travelers (including pets, and then some) with open arms, turning a global tragedy into an unforgettable act of kindness. You may need tissues at some point, but it’s mostly all good fun, good feelings, good laughs, and great music. (Father’s Day or not, it’s a must-see.)
Directed by Michael Williams and musically led by Rony Fortich, the show thrives on its chorus of 13 varied voices, all playing several main parts—among them Cathy Azanza‑Dy, Caisa Borromeo, Garrett Bolden, Mayen Cadd, Carla Guevarra-Laforteza, Menchu Lauchengco‑Yulo, Gian Magdangal, George Schulze, and Sheila Francisco, who each usually hold starring roles but play off each other so effortlessly and effectively here as an ensemble. These actors swap multiple roles, accents, even chairs with seamless precision—a testament to their exceptional performing skills. There are no weak links here. The cast’s chemistry is the production’s beating heart. – Kimberly Rocha-Delgado, Digital Editor
The musical runs until June 29 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater. Tickets: https://premier.ticketworld.com.ph/shows/show.aspx?sh=CFAWAY25. More information: https://www.gmg-productions.com/shows/comefromaway/
