Taking place this summer, the three-day adventures give travelers a chance to soak in the Italian countryside before experiencing the centuries-old equestrian competition. Dating back to the 13th century, the Palio is steeped in tradition. Taking place twice a year in the historic medieval city of Siena, the bareback horse race sees 10 of the 17 distinct neighborhoods (or contrade) compete.
