Fabric of a Nation: The Philippine Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka
In a celebration of heritage and innovation, the Philippine Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka emerges as an expression of national identity. Bold in form, rooted in craft, and alive with movement, the pavilion is located in the Expo’s Empowering Lives Zone. The structure, titled Woven, is an immersive embodiment of how tradition and technology, and nature and nation, are inextricably intertwined. Designed and conceptualized by Carlo Calma Consultancy Inc. and brought to life through the collective effort of hundreds of Filipino artisans and creatives, Woven is not merely a structure; it is a cultural movement.
The Woven Pavilion expands the language of architecture through the lens of Filipino weaving. Its form echoes the interlacing rhythm of warp and weft, shaped by over a thousand linear rattan elements that arch, bend, and flow with expressive intent. These sculptural extensions appear in flux, as if the building were caught mid-weave symbolizing both creative momentum and collective strength.
But the pavilion is more than a metaphor. At its heart is the largest-ever collaboration of Filipino community weavers in a single project, forming a rich tapestry of regional identities. In partnership with the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute, the pavilion brings together weavers from all 18 regions of the Philippines, each contributing handwoven tiles that reflect the soul of their respective ethnolinguistic groups. Representing the largest collection of Filipino weaves assembled at one site, these 212 unique textile panels adorn the pavilion’s rattan-clad exterior, standing as a vibrant testament to the Philippines’ diversity, ingenuity, and unity.
Outside, the pavilion pulses with life—literally. For the first time in a Philippine World Expo pavilion, an interactive live-performance façade integrates traditional dance and craft demonstrations directly into the architecture. At scheduled intervals, performers emerge from the very fabric of the building, captivating audiences with dynamic storytelling. This visionary feature challenges the conventional definition of a pavilion, blurring the boundary between structure and living art.
Inside, the experience deepens. Designed in collaboration with experiential studio Tellart, the pavilion invites visitors into a multi-layered journey of sensory installations and interactive environments. It’s a narrative told not only through objects, but through gestures that celebrate human connection in a digitally driven world.
The pavilion was made possible by the Philippine Organizing Committee, under the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions Board. The project was brought to life by a multidisciplinary team: lead architecture firm, Carlo Calma Consultancy, executive architect and project manager Cat Inc., and creative production house 1053.co, led by Chochay Garcia.
In a global showcase of ideas, the Philippine Pavilion offers something extraordinary—the collaborative and expressive act of weaving, not just of indigenous materials, but of Filipino stories, communities, and a shared future on the world stage.
