Practical and Powerful: The Audi RS 6 Performance

Audi’s RS 6 Performance is the marque’s most powerful wagon ever.

Wagons and estates are not typically thought of as track weapons or asphalt eaters but, rather, docile people movers and cargo specialists, and that’s perfectly okay in a practical sense. But the Audi RS 6 Performance begs to disagree. While on one hand, it can be an errand facilitator—with a spacious and luxurious cabin and generous cargo capacity, to boot—it is also the Ingolstadt-headquartered line’s most powerful wagon ever.

Under the hood growls a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo TFSI engine good for 630 hp and 850 Nm. Audi said that the power bump comes from the model’s larger turbochargers and the higher boost pressure that they provide (up to 2.6 bar). The numbers translate to a standstill-to-100 kph rate of 3.4 seconds to a top speed of 305 kph. The massive mill is mated with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission engineered for quicker shifts toward “seamless power delivery” in all conditions. It also uses an integrated 48-volt hybrid system similar to the one on the A8 sedan and Q8 crossover. This is said to aid in power delivery.

Since it’s an Audi, there’s no surprise that it gets the brand’s vaunted Quattro all-wheel-drive system that allows the estate to promise sharper handling and heightened agility—not to mention maximum traction—as output is distributed between the front and rear axles.

With a twin-turbo V8 mill rumbling underneath the hood, this Audi makes short work of challengers and grocery runs alike.

In aid of agility and performance, designers shed eight kilograms from the RS 6 Avant Performance by utilizing less insulation and fitting on the lighter wheels. RS-specific exterior touches communicated the heightened abilities. You can make out the wider fenders, enlarged air intakes, and more pronounced aerodynamic elements.

As a true driver’s car, the cockpit is appropriately and tastefully accented with carbon fiber and Alcantara, and is fitted with sports seats. RS displays convey relevant performance data, and the infotainment system is predicated on Audi’s MMI upon a 10.1-inch touchscreen. This promises all the connectivity niceties (read: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), and content will find expression through a Bang & Olufsen system.

Have your cake and eat it, too.
