Louis Vuitton x Keith Haring: Inside the New Artycapucines Handbag Collection
Keith Haring collapsed the distance between fine art and everyday life. Fashion has kept that legacy remarkably alive in many ways. His figures have appeared for decades on T-shirts, denim, watches, bags, and sneakers as new brand collaborations with his estate spring left and right. Louis Vuitton now brings that visual language to the Capucines.
Unveiled last September 30, 2026, the eighth chapter of its Artycapucines series was developed with the Keith Haring Foundation and comprises 13 bags and collector pieces based on the artist’s drawings. The collaboration also follows Nicolas Ghesquière’s Cruise 2027 collection, which took a Haring-customized Louis Vuitton suitcase from 1984 as one of its starting points.
Across the new Artycapucines, Haring’s imagery is worked directly into Vuitton’s leathercraft and decorative techniques rather than simply printed onto the bags. Some of the strongest pieces preserve the nervous energy of Haring’s line. Black-outlined figures spill across the Capucines BB Figures, climbing over the bag and into its handles and charms.
Elsewhere, the craftsmanship becomes almost obsessive. The East-West Mini Maze and Mini Figures each require roughly 240 hours of embroidery, while the Nano Running Heart is covered in more than 12,000 crystals. Barking dogs march across the white resin Minaudière Capucines Pets in black enamel. Even a New York takeout box gets the full treatment, recast as a jeweled collector’s object.
In 1984, Haring famously covered a 1930s Louis Vuitton suitcase with his Radiant Baby motif, creating an object the house would eventually acquire in 2020. Nicolas Ghesquière returned to that trunk for Cruise 2027, presented in May at New York’s Frick Collection. Its aged cognacCognacA brandy distilled from white wine grapes in the Cognac region of France and aged in oak, graded by age categories such as VS, VSOP, and XO. Prestigious houses produceGo to Cognac Glossary finish now reappears on the Capucines MM Genesis and Valisette Genesis, recreated in calfskin. More than four decades later, Vuitton is picking up a conversation Haring himself had already started.
From 1980 to 1985, Haring filled blank advertising panels across the New York subway with chalk drawings, putting his work directly in front of commuters. The Pop Shop followed in 1986, extending that reach through shirts, toys, posters, and buttons priced far below gallery art. Yet the accessibility never made the work lightweight. Beneath the dancing figures and barking dogs were recurring concerns with racism, nuclear fear, sexuality, addiction, and, after his AIDS diagnosis, the epidemic that would claim his life in 1990 at 31.
The Keith Haring Foundation has kept his imagery in public circulation by treating licensing as an extension of that original reach. His work has appeared with fashion houses, mass-market retailers, and watchmakers, from Comme des Garçons and Levi’s to Uniqlo and Swatch. Some partnerships also return to relationships Haring established himself, including Swatch, for which he designed watches in 1986.
His commercial afterlife has a practical purpose, as well. Licensing income helps fund the foundation’s grants for children and for organizations working in HIV/AIDS education and care.
Select pieces are set to be unveiled during Art Basel Paris this month. The collection reaches stores worldwide on January 1, 2027. Explore Louis Vuitton’s Keith Haring collaboration and Cruise 2027 collection here.
