Carlo Calma’s practice spans architecture, interior and furniture design, art, set and costume design, and installation. His father, Pablito, is a civil engineer and builder, while his mother, Maribel, was involved in the design and manufacturing of tiles. This creative lineage likely shaped Calma’s artistry and informed his boundary-pushing approach to design. As the head of Carlo Calma Consultancy Inc., he’s known for crafting surreal environments that blur the lines between architecture and art. His recent project, the Philippine Pavilion for Expo 2025 in Osaka, is a modular structure celebrating indigenous craftsmanship with rattan and textile cladding. Calma is also responsible for the design of Asador Alfonso, a public restaurant and private residential retreat in Cavite inspired by the nearby Taal Volcano.
