A watch that knows the date until 2100 might be expected to make room for the machinery, but Vacheron Constantin’s new Overseas Perpetual CalendarPerpetual CalendarA watch complication that automatically tracks the date, day, month, and leap years, requiring no manual adjustment until the year 2100 in most cases. The perpetual calendar demonstrates remarkable mechanicalGo to Perpetual Calendar Glossary Ultra-Thin is just 8.1 mm thick. Inside its white gold case, a movement only 4.05 mm thick tracks the day, date, month, leap-year cycle, and phases of the moon.

The watch marks the Overseas collection’s 30th anniversary with a new azure dial and a limited run of 200 numbered pieces. At 41.5 mm across, it has the presence of a sports watch, though its slender case and intricate calendar place it firmly within the world of high watchmaking.

The Overseas was introduced in 1996, following the path established by Vacheron Constantin’s 222 in 1977. Over three generations, it has developed a recognizable identity built around a notched bezel, an integrated bracelet with links inspired by the Maltese cross, and a design intended for frequent wear. The current generation, launched in 2016, added a system that allows owners to change the bracelet and straps without tools.

For this anniversary edition, the most immediate change is the dial. Its azure lacquer is lighter and less saturated than the deep blue associated with many Overseas models. A sunburst finish gives the center a shifting appearance under different light, while the moon-phase disc matches the dial’s color. The day, date, month, and leap-year indications remain distinct without crowding the face.

Making those displays fit inside such a thin watch is the greater accomplishment: the self-winding Calibre 1120 QP contains 276 components and measures just 4.05 mm thick. Its perpetual calendar accounts for months of different lengths and for leap years, so it will require no date correction until 2100, provided the watch is kept running and correctly set. That year is the next exception to the usual four-year leap-year cycle under the Gregorian calendar.

The movement is visible through a sapphire case back, and the watch’s bridges are bevelled and decorated with Côtes de Genève, while the mainplate bears a circular perlage finish. A 22-karat gold oscillating weight is engraved with a compass rose, a reference to the Overseas collection’s association with travel.

The watch comes on an integrated white gold bracelet with a micro-adjustment clasp. Two textured rubber straps, one white and one denim blue, are also included, each fitted with an interchangeable white gold pin buckle. Changing among them alters the watch’s appearance without requiring a visit to a boutique or a set of tools.

On a white gold bracelet, it carries the weight of a major anniversary piece. On rubber, its 8.1 mm case slips beneath a cuff.
