By 1976, Gérald Genta had already helped rewrite the rules of the luxury sports watch. The Royal Oak had arrived four years earlier, and the Nautilus would make its debut that same year. This extraordinary run of integrated-bracelet designs was capped off by IWC’s Ingenieur SL, really, although its path to collector canon proved considerably less direct. Frankly, it was, by most commercial measures, a failure. The decade effectively invented the luxury steel sports watch, but the Ingenieur SL just couldn't find the right audience. Only 598 pieces were produced between 1976 and 1983. Half a century later, that scarcity has helped turn the model into one of the most coveted vintage IWCs.
