Maison Jewelmer
Behind double doors lined with golden mother-of-pearl is Maison Jewelmer, a by-invitation, by-appointment space in a penthouse with a view way above the hubbub of Makati’s central business district.
In the maison’s entrance foyer, Chinese and Vietnamese pottery from the 15th century, retrieved from a shipwreck beneath Jewelmer’s pearl farm, make interesting conversation starters.
I’ve always been fascinated by the story of the lustrous South Sea golden pearl, our national gem, cultivated in the waters off Palawan, and the close to 400 individual steps over five years it takes to produce a single pearl from the gold-lipped Pinctada maxima oyster.
