Porsche is ready for its next supercar era.

Weeks after word started circulating that the German marqueMarqueA brand name of a car manufacturer, particularly one associated with prestige, such as Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, or Aston Martin. The term emphasizes a make's heritage and identity beyond product lines,Go to Marque Glossary was working on a new supercar, it has confirmed that it is doing just that. The vehicle, or at least its concept, will be called the Mission S, and it will be an entirely new model that sits above the long-running 911.

The confirmation of the car’s existence came during Porsche’s latest Capital Markets Day event on Wednesday. During the showcase, the automaker’s new CEO Mark Leiters revealed that the company plans to build more exclusive halo projects going forward, including a mid-engine supercarSupercarA high-performance sports car with exceptional speed, advanced engineering, and striking design, produced in low volumes by marques such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren. But Porsche wasn’t done. Shortly after the event, a short video was posted to the company’s social media channels that offered quick flashes of a mysterious vehicle bearing the brand’s famous crest. Even more tantalizing was the accompanying caption, which reads: “Welcome Mission S. Our love letter to the sports car.”

It’s not a huge surprise that Porsche is ready to give supercars another go. The 911 may be the automaker’s most iconic model—as well as one of the most beloved sports cars of all time—but there have been several instances over the last four decades where it didn’t atop its model lineup. There was the legendary 959 in the 1980s, followed by the Carrera GT (picture up top) in the aughts, and then, most recently, the 918 Spyder. Each of these vehicles is considered to among the best performance vehicles of their eras.

Last month’s rumors suggest that the Mission S won’t just be another supercarSupercarA high-performance sports car with exceptional speed, advanced engineering, and striking design, produced in low volumes by marques such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren. Supercars sit near the top ofGo to Supercar Glossary, though. It was reported that the vehicle could also be the first from the brand to feature a flat-eight engine. If true, the new model will be a beast. Earlier this year, Porsche’s eFuel project manager said his team was testing out a prototype with a 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-eight that made 750 hp, 728 ft lbs of torque, and redlined at 9,000 rpm.
