How This $35 Million “Pop Art” McLaren F1 GTR Could Make Auction History

The 1996 racer served as a McLaren development car before spending 25 years with Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

How many cars can claim the kind of auction capital commanded by the McLaren F1? Chassis 10R, though, takes things to the next level. It arrives in Monterey with an unusually serious prospect: this particular make might just become the most valuable British car ever sold under the hammer this week. RM Sotheby’s is currently offering the 1996 McLaren F1 GTR during its Monterey sale, which runs from August 13 to 15, with the auction house placing its value at more than $35 million. Should it reach that figure, the car would comfortably surpass the current auction record for both McLaren and a British automobile, set when a 1994 F1 fetched $25.3 million at RM Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi sale back in December 2025. Built in December 1995, it was the first F1 GTR completed to McLaren’s more developed 1996 specification and is one of just two Short-Tail factory prototypes, alongside..
