Only 50 Mercedes-Maybach V12 Editions Will Be Made

The Maybach Zeppelin was first shown in 1928 with a 7.0-liter V-12 that made 150 horsepower, a stunning figure for the time, and still impressive 50 years later. Nowadays, the Mercedes-Maybach S680 has a 6.0-liter V-12 engine making over four times that amount of power. The marque just released a new V12 Edition of the car to celebrate the legacy.

The Mercedes–Maybach V12 Edition debuted on Tuesday in Italy and has details like 24-carat gold in places and special badging, including an emblem that is inspired by that of the hood ornament on the Maybach Zeppelin. The two-tone paint, in colors of olive metallic and obsidian black metallic, takes 10 days to apply, the company says, which is double the time it takes to do the paint on an ordinary Mercedes-Maybach S680.

Inside, there is a leather colored in “exclusive” saddle brown, as well as bespoke Champagne flutes, a handcrafted steering wheel, and various other emblems. The key box is also handcrafted, and the key ring is unique, which is a detail you can tell the person you may be gifting the car to.

The V12 Edition is powered by the aforementioned V-12, which sends the car from a stop to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds. That isn’t as fast as a supercar but is pretty quick for a vehicle that weighs over two-and-a-half tons. The top speed is electronically limited at 155 mph.

Mercedes said it will make just 50 examples of the V12 Edition. The brand did not share how much it will cost, but it will likely be more than a base C-Class. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class starts at around a quarter-million dollars, so we can also assume it’s more than that, too, and perhaps much more. Customers can expect to take delivery of the car this fall.

“As the embodiment of a high-quality travel and representation vehicle—as well as a sporty type for the passionate sportsman—the ʻMaybach-Zeppelinʼ is the ultimate automobile of wish fulfilment, characterized by distinguished elegance and power,” a brochure about the Maybach Zeppelin said at the time of its release. Almost a century later, Mercedes is still going for the same ideal.
