Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) wants to make daggy river cruise ships a thing of the past. The Swedish firm, part of the Viken studio, has unveiled a new 443-footer that takes design cues from sleek, stylish superyachts.

River cruise ships are typically low, flat, and boxy, as that shape allows them to pass under bridges and access narrow passages. Connect, which the studio says is the first of its kind, feels much less utilitarian in design. It eschews the space-saving square bow found on, say, a Viking ship in favor of a sharp reverse bow featured on many modern superyachts. It also showcases flowing lines and curves in place of the usual sharp corners, resulting in a more aerodynamic silhouette than other riverboats.

That bucking of convention continues inside. The material palette is more akin to that of a superyacht or high-end hotel rather than a traditional cruise ship, with natural timbers, textured stones, warm metals, and soft fabrics. The decor is not overly fussy or formal, but rather relaxed and refined. Large windows also allow the rivers themselves to become part of the onboard environment.

“Our ambition was to create an environment that immediately feels welcoming, spacious and connected to its surroundings,” Viken Group CEO Anna Silvesjö said in a statement. “Rather than creating the feeling of being inside a ship, we wanted guests to feel as though they were moving through a contemporary boutique hotel or private yacht that just happens to travel along Europe’s rivers.”

Designed for Transcend Cruises, the newcomer is geared toward private charters and high-end group travel. It is outfitted with 60 generous staterooms, with guest accommodation spread across two decks. The staterooms can also be combined to create 30 larger suites. The 120 guests will be cared for by 54 crew members, resulting in what the studio says is one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios on any river cruise ship.

The social heart of the vessel is “the Forum,” a two-story amphitheatre-style space that can be used for performances, celebrations, and presentations. The layout also includes multiple lounges and private salons, a barista bar, a library, a chef’s table, and a wine vault. Other highlights include a spa, fitness studio, yoga space, and sauna, plus a top deck with a grill and outdoor cinema.

“The residential character of the interiors helps guests relax, while integrated technology subtly adapts each space to the needs of different events and charter programs,” Silvesjö says.

Powered by low-emission EU Stage V engines, the ship can reach speeds of up to 14 knots. It also comes equipped with an electric thruster system for short emissions-free stints.

Connect is currently in the final stages of outfitting at Den Breejen Shipyard in the Netherlands, with launch expected sometime later this year.

FAQs

Connect is a 443-foot river cruise ship designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden for Transcend Cruises. Its exterior and interiors draw inspiration from contemporary superyachts and boutique hotels rather than traditional riverboats.

The ship can host up to 120 guests across 60 staterooms. These rooms can also be combined to create 30 larger suites for private charters and high-end group travel.

Connect includes a two-story event space called the Forum, several lounges and private salons, a library, barista bar, chef’s table, wine vault, spa, fitness studio, yoga area, sauna, outdoor cinema, and top-deck grill.

Connect replaces the boxy silhouette common to river vessels with a reverse bow, flowing exterior lines, large windows, and residential interiors. Its flexible layout is designed to feel more like a private yacht or contemporary hotel.

The vessel is powered by low-emission EU Stage V engines and includes an electric thruster system for short periods of emissions-free operation. It can reach a top speed of approximately 14 knots.
