Long Defunct Shipyard Tecnomarine Relaunches With 5 New Aluminum Superyachts

Tecnomarine is back with a vengeance. 

The Italian shipyard, which closed down at the turn of the millennium, has restarted operations under the leadership of entrepreneur Massimiliano Zilioli. It has unveiled a new, five-strong lineup, with two designs set to be fully unveiled at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show.

Tecnomarine was founded in Viareggio in 1972 by Moreno Maestrelli and the Picchiotti family. It launched more than 300 yachts over the subsequent years, garnering a reputation for high-quality aluminum construction. Amid ownership woes and market shifts, the Viareggio yard was sold to yachting powerhouse Azimut-Benetti in the early 2000s, effectively putting an end to the Tecnomarine brand. Until now, that is. 

Zilioli, who acquired the Tecnomarine brand, has resumed construction at the Navicelli Canal facility in Pisa. With roughly 38,000 square feet of covered space and 32,000 square feet of outdoor space, the yard will focus on producing large aluminum superyachts.  

“The relaunch of Tecnomarine Yachts represents an industrial challenge built on solid foundations: the shipyard’s heritage and the excellence of Made in Italy,” Zilioli said in a statement. “Restarting from a strategic district such as Pisa Navicelli allows us to combine traditional craftsmanship with the latest construction technologies.”

The current Tecnomarine portfolio includes five models—the TM33, TM40, TM41, TM45, and TM90—which range from 82 to 164 feet. Each production model will be designed entirely around the requirements of individual owners, resulting in extensively customized cruisers. The displacement and semi-displacement yachts will also be crafted in aluminum, reflecting Tecnomarine’s half-century legacy. 

“Our objective is not simply to bring a historic brand back to the water, but to position it among the leaders in aluminum yacht construction by offering yachts that deliver safety, efficiency and a disciplined design language,” adds Zilioli.

The first two models to be unveiled, the TM33 and the TM40, were both developed in close collaboration with Michele Dragoni and her eponymous studio Dragoni Designlab. 

The TM33 is billed as a fresh take on an aluminum fast cruiser. The 108-footer features a sporty, aerodynamic profile with taut exterior lines and a surprisingly generous layout with expansive indoor and outdoor living spaces. The TM40 (pictured top) is a long-range cruiser, with a long yet lightweight aluminum displacement hull for greater cruising efficiency. The 131-footer is replete with mirrored glazing that helps connect guests with the sea. The layout is also designed to foster connections with the water.

Tecnomarine will showcase the TM33, the TM40, and the rest of the models at the Monaco Yacht Show this September.
