One of the luxury properties of Virgin Limited Edition, Richard Branson’s exclusive collection of award-winning retreats, Mahali Mzuri is set in Maasai Mara with views over the valley that forms the Great Wildebeest Migration route. This refurbishment will breathe new life into the camp’s 12 luxury tents and common spaces, including the dining tent, bar, lounge, and swimming pool.
The camp’s interior redesign is a collaboration with acclaimed design firm Lynne Hunt London, and its goal is clear: to enhance the guest experience by creating a serene, immersive environment that fosters a deeper connection with the natural beauty of the Maasai Mara. While maintaining its signature tented structure and respect for Maasai culture, the new design will bring a contemporary twist to African style, incorporating natural materials and an earthy colour palette. Vivid accents of red and black—evocative of the traditional Maasai attire—will complement this focus, while a collection of contemporary artworks by local East African artists will infuse the space with regional character and creativity.
The 12 luxury tent accommodations, including a dedicated family tent, will feature spacious, open-plan suites designed to bring the outside in. Large wraparound windows and private terraces will offer sweeping views of the breathtaking Maasai Mara landscape, ensuring guests are constantly immersed in the wilderness. Each tent will maintain its intimate, tented charm, but with an upgraded aesthetic that reflects a more contemporary safari experience, combining comfort and style with nature’s beauty.
The communal spaces will undergo a similar transformation. The open firepit area, which has long been a central gathering point for guests after game drives, will be retained, while the newly reimagined bar and lounge spaces will offer a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, ideal for unwinding with a cocktail as wildlife roams the valley beyond.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of Mahali Mzuri, and the upcoming changes will only strengthen the camp’s eco-conscious ethos. The camp has long been committed to protecting the surrounding land and wildlife, working closely with Maasai landowners and conservationists. In addition, a solar farm powers the camp with up to 100% renewable energy, while a rainwater harvesting system and an expanding kitchen garden—providing home-grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs—further reduce its environmental footprint.
As always, the camp’s community engagement remains a key focus, with 80% of the staff coming from nearby Maasai villages. The ongoing development of a primary school for 300 pupils, funded by generous guest donations, is just one example of Mahali Mzuri’s commitment to uplifting the local community.
The refurbishment will be completed just in time for the return of the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural phenomena. Every year, thousands of wildebeest traverse the Maasai Mara and Serengeti in search of fresh grazing, creating a stunning spectacle that is central to Mahali Mzuri’s very origins.
