Michael Jordan’s Ferrari 550 Maranello Sold for a Record $2.7 Million
Michael Jordan still hasn’t gotten tired of making headlines.
A 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello once owned by basketball’s G.O.A.T. just sold for a record-setting $2.7 million. The sale, which was overseen by Joopiter and Curated, comes just one day after a game-worn Jordan jersey set another record at auction.
The auction for this Prancing Horse came to an end on Wednesday evening. Prior to the sale, Joopiter had said it believed the grand tourerGrand TourerA high-performance car designed for fast, comfortable long-distance driving, combining a powerful engine with a luxurious cabin. The grand tourer prioritizes refinement over track focus, and models from Bentley, Ferrari,Go to Grand Tourer Glossary would command as much as $1.3 million, but bidding more than doubled this figure. The auction house did not say what the previous auction record for the car was (a 2001 550 GT1 sold for $4.9 million in 2021, but it’s a race car that is not street-legal).
Of course, this isn’t just any 550 Maranello. The NBA great can be seen driving the vehicle in The Last Dance, the 10-part docuseries charting the sixth and final championship of his legendary career. Chassis no. 108712 is finished in Rosso Barchetta and features a tan leather interior equipped with a driver’s seat customized to fit the billionaire’s six-foot-six frame.
Less bespoke, but no less noteworthy, is the 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12 under the car’s hood. The mill, which can be found in every road-going example of the model, makes 478 hp and 419 ft lbs of torque. It could accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds and hit a top speed of 199 mph brand new, numbers that it may still be capable of considering the car has just 1,900 miles on the odometer.
Jordan may not have driven the car much, but he did hold onto it until the early 2000s. The vehicle inspired the look of the Air Jordan 14 from 1998, which features a Jumpman logo inspired by the iconic Prancing Horse badge, quilted leather side panels, and a tire-tread heel.
Amazingly, the 550 Maranello isn’t the most expensive piece of Jordan memorabilia to change hands this week. On Tuesday, Joopiter sold the jersey he wore in Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals for $12.26 million. The gavel price broke the previous record for a game-worn jersey, which belonged to Jordan’s jersey from Game 1 of that year’s finals, by $2.16 million.
