Secret watches are one of the most seductive traditions in haute horologie. Graff

Originating in the early 20th century, secret watches allowed timepieces to pass as bracelets at a time when checking the hour openly could be considered impolite; in some circles, a watch on women’s wrists at a formal dinner is still considered a faux pas. But these timepieces will surely get away with it: Hidden beneath diamond-set flowers, sculpted animals (like some antique and vintage pieces in the Panthère de Cartier collection), ancient coins, and ingenious jeweled covers are dials revealing the time with the flip of a nearly invisible hinge, button, or sliding mechanism, even if the watch itself is anything but.

Hermès, Cartier, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels and other leading maisons continue the tradition through high-jewelry craftsmanship, exceptional gemstones, and compact movements. Here are nine extraordinary secret watches available today, or presented through private inquiry.

1. Hermès Médor Joaillerie

Hermès

A pyramidal stud inspired by Hermès’s Collier de Chien conceals the dial, which is revealed by pressing a button on the crown. The current 15 mm rose-gold model (priced at $53,300 or approximately Php3,267,000) is set with 32 diamonds and fitted with a golden opaline guilloché dial.

2. Cartier Haute Joaillerie Secret Watch

Cartier

Cartier turns timekeeping into a private detail beneath an architectural diamond-set cabochon-cut sapphire (a little over 25 carats) cover. Reference HPI00948 incorporates 28 baguette-cut diamonds totaling 1.49 carats and 768 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 14.71 carats. Price upon request.

3. Bulgari Serpenti Misteriosi Cleopatra

Bulgari

A faceted rubellite weighing more than five carats covers the diamond-set dial. Powered by Bulgari’s diminutive Piccolissimo mechanical movement, the unique creation won the Jewellery Watch Prize at the 2023 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Designed as a manchette, a piece of jewelry ubiquitous around the wrists of kings and queens in antiquity (including Cleopatra, hence the name), it was listed for CHF938,000 or Php71,000,000 back in 2023. Need it? You’ll have to ask Bulgari.

4. Bulgari Monete Catene High Jewellery Secret Watch

Bulgari Monete
Bulgari

Probably more accessible than the Serpenti Misteriosi Cleopatra (just a little bit) is the Monete watch, in which an authentic, ancient Roman silver coin bearing the effigy of Emperor Caracalla (198–217 AD) or dual coins of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna (193–211 AD) forms the hinged cover over the dial. The current Monete Catene is powered by Bulgari’s manually wound Piccolissimo micro-movement and is offered in rose gold and yellow gold interpretations. Price upon request.

5. Van Cleef & Arpels Ludo Secret Watch

Van Cleef & Arpels

The flexible, brick-pattern Van Cleef & Arpels Ludo bracelet conceals a guilloché mother-of-pearl dial beneath its central jeweled motif. The maison currently presents several interpretations incorporating diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Price upon request and customization.

6. Chanel Nœud de Camélia Secret Cuff

Chanel

A hand-set camellia serves as the dial cover, bringing together the couture bow and Gabrielle Chanel’s favored flower. The Nœud de Camélia collection includes embroidered, diamond-set cuff and ring interpretations and is scheduled to reach boutiques in November 2026.

7. Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 Secrets

Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 Secrets Secret Watch

More than 1,000 diamonds totaling over 26 carats, set in platinum, disguise this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch as a rivière bracelet. Pressing an almost invisible diamond-set button reveals its mother-of-pearl dial and the manually wound Calibre 101 within. Price upon request.

8. Chopard Ice Cube Secret Watch

9. Graff Oval Diamond Secret Watch

Graff Secret Watch
Graff

A prominent oval diamond conceals the dial within a fluid bracelet composed of exceptional oval stones, revealed by a light touch on an emerald-cut diamond. The timepiece reflects Graff’s gemstone-led apprsoach, allowing the watch mechanism to disappear into the high-jewelry composition.

Prices and availability are subject to change and may vary by market. High-jewelry and unique-piece watches are available through private inquiry online and at selected boutiques.

FAQs

A secret watch is a timepiece with a dial concealed beneath a decorative cover. The time is revealed through a hinged, sliding, swivelling or button-operated mechanism.

The name refers to the hidden dial, which allows the watch to appear primarily as a bracelet or piece of high jewelry until its wearer chooses to reveal the time.

Secret watches became particularly fashionable during the early 20th century, when women’s timepieces were frequently designed as jeweled bracelets for discreet timekeeping.

Hermès, Cartier, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chanel, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Chopard and Graff are among the maisons producing contemporary secret watches or accepting private inquiries for exceptional pieces.

Some models are offered through selected boutiques, while high-jewelry and unique pieces generally require a private inquiry. Availability, price and customization options vary by maison and market.
