In the softly lit world of ultra- horology, the Patek Philippe Gondolo Serata has earned quite the reputation for its cinematic appeal. Its softly curved silhouette, punctuated by an Art Deco temperament, always seemed destined for candlelit rooms and those intimate, whispered conversations. Now, Patek Philippe is reintroducing this icon in rose gold. But this time, the maison is rekindling its playfulness with a dial unlike any before.

As sculptural as it is seductive, ’s new Gondolo Serata “Zebra” captures the maison’s rare balance between high watchmaking and high jewelry. The sapphire crystal canvas engraved with a zebra motif dances with shadow and light. Presented in Geneva this October, the fresh release reimagines the Gondolo Serata as a contemporary jewel for the wrist, merging Art Deco sensuality with Patek Philippe’s unrivaled craftsmanship.

When it debuted in 2006, the Gondolo Serata stood apart from the competition for its curvaceous form and mother-of-pearl dial framed in diamonds. In contrast, the 2025 “Zebra” edition, cast in rose gold, reinvents this legacy with an interesting visual motif and a new technical artistry that speaks to Patek Philippe’s creative evolution. The manufacturer, known for its mastery of métiers d’art, extends its command of engraving and enameling techniques to sapphire crystal, which is a material rarely used with such expressive flair.

Nature as Abstraction

What truly arrests the eye at first glance is, undeniably, the dial. Its exquisite volume provides a new dimension in terms of depth. Inspired by the cloisonné enamel dial of the Golden Ellipse Ref. 5738/50G-023 from the 2022 Rare Handcrafts collection, the “Zebra” distills natural patterns into delicate abstraction. Likewise, its dial, engraved and black-varnished on both sides, reveals a hypnotic play built on contrast.

Through black metallization and delicate layers of white varnish found on the dial’s underside, achieves a visual illusion of rhythm, as if it’s referencing the living shimmer of light that bathes a zebra’s coat under the moonlight. The applied Breguet numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock, and the rose gold leaf hands, glide with such a measured grace, too. Texture is further emphasized through the richly dimensional background.

Of course, true to its name, the Serata (the Italian word for “evening”) is a masterclass in radiance. We get 94 brilliant-cut spessartite gemstones, totaling 2.02 carats, framing the case in a double gradient of warm hues, shifting from a beautiful deep to tangerine. This sort of tonal choreography further intensifies the case’s cambered silhouette and “waisted” architecture (reminiscent of the feminine figure it was designed to adorn). On the other hand, a secondary row of gemstones along the lower curvature accentuates its sculptural asymmetry. This creates an interesting dialogue between symmetry and sensual tension that ultimately defines the Gondolo lineage.

An Ode to Modern Femininity and Timeless Form

Measuring 28.6 by 40.85 millimeters, the rose gold case is both compact and commanding. The attention to detail extends to the finishing of its quartz caliber E15, whose components are executed with the same precision as ’s mechanical movements. This, in itself, underscores the maison’s long-honored philosophy that beauty and perfection reside not only in complexity but in the unseen discipline of craftsmanship.

While the dial, case, gemstone, and glass define most of the piece, it still needed the proper podium to exhibit them. That’s where the white satin-finish calfskin strap comes in, closing with a rose gold pin buckle bearing the logo. It serves as an understated punctuation to an otherwise theatrical composition. The result is a watch that just transcends its function. We can argue that it transforms into an objet d’art, an heirloom that bridges generations of aesthetic codes.

In a horological landscape where minimalism often masquerades as sophistication, the “Zebra” goes against the tide of the times. It asserts something rarer: sensual exuberance with technical restraint. It is an homage to the woman who wears complexity lightly, the modern collector whose sense of time is both ornamental and profound. Patek Philippe is simply reaffirming the place of beauty in precision, detailing the emotion in its engineering. The Gondolo Serata “Zebra,” as it seems, embodies an evening distilled in gold, light, and rhythm.
